Senate Approves Bill To Ban TikTok

The fate of the short-form video app TikTok in the United States remains uncertain after the Senate passed a bill that would force a sale of the app or ban it outright.

The bill, which passed by a vote of 64-26, would require ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, to sell the app to a U.S. company within 90 days. If ByteDance fails to do so, the bill would ban TikTok from operating in the United States.

The bill is now headed to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to face a tougher fight. The House has already passed a similar bill, but it included a provision that would have allowed TikTok to continue operating in the United States if it agreed to certain conditions.

The Senate bill does not include any such provision, and it is unclear whether the House will be willing to accept a bill that would outright ban TikTok.

TikTok has said that it is "disappointed" by the Senate's vote and that it believes the bill is "unconstitutional." The company has also said that it is "confident" that it will be able to continue operating in the United States.

The Trump administration has been pressuring TikTok to sell to a U.S. company, citing national security concerns. The administration has argued that TikTok could be used by the Chinese government to collect data on American users.

TikTok has denied these allegations, and it has said that it does not share user data with the Chinese government.
